BRILLIANT NEW YEAR EVERYONE. I hope it was a happy and safe and celebratory time for you. As I have a new "nest" I decided to forgo the festivities at the clubhouse and cook super healthy food for myself, catch up on some Masterpiece Theater DVD's from the local library and reflect upon the past while looking forward to the exciting future.
This year's adjective is BRILLIANT! Last year's was AWESOME. I am working/playing my way through the alphabet.
Today I finished the gold inking of this 11" x 14" watercolor mandala while the cold rain came down. Taking photographs of the mandala in natural light was a bit of a challenge, but I was able to snap this one out on the covered porch. Rain and watercolors don't mix. Well actually they do which is the danger. The rain thwarted my Trail Association hike this morning but I shall not complain. Rainy days are great days to peacefully render on paper. Hopefully we will be able to see the full moon over the lake tonight.
And... That's it. Get back to your relaxation and chilling out on this first day of the new year. Here is toasting (for me with a cup of hot tea) to a AWESOMELY BRILLIANT ART-FULL YEAR!
PS: I have two watercolor mandala workshops coming up at the Leesburg Center For the Arts. They are in March and April so I will fill you in closer to the dates. ENJOY!

WHEN ART CREATES ITSELF THROUGH YOU
Hello everyone and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays. I just wanted to jump on for a second to wish you a wonderful day. I am currently in Lake County, FL and not traveling for a change. I am at my own home (thank you Universe) and am helping out a neighbor who went up north to be with family for the week. I am taking care of his dog.
No, this is not a photo of Slippers from next door. This photo spread is from one of my books NATURE MANDALAS WITHIN AN URBAN LANDSCAPE - BUENOS AIRES. I came upon it while pulling some images for the lecture that I am giving on January 10th at the Leesburg Center For the Arts. The red of the ceibo flower (cockspur coral - the national flower of Argentina) is so vibrant it made me think of Christmas. The dog is a former neighbor from when I lived in Cabillito, a barrio of Buenos Aires. Oh those eyes... they sure know how to pull at your heart strings.
The two images, nature and cityscape, worked perfectly. The red of the flowers and of his collar, the shape and color of the corner leaves and his ears, the straight lines of the cut reeds and the lines of the paneling mirror one another. It wasn't planned. The entire book was not planned. The pairing up of the small nature mandalas made in the urban parks with photos of my adopted city just created itself. I will be talking about the aspect of art and intuition and flow on the 10th. Yes, in the right circumstances you are the instrument AND you are the music - you are the art.
Enjoy! I hope to see you very soon.

HOLIDAY DECOR IN THE FOREST
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
May it be a joyous season full of love for all of human and animal kind and for Mother Earth!
The weather has warmed up this week in Central Florida (thank goodness) and it was time to head out for another afternoon of trail walking and exploring Nature's Paintbox. I chose to go to the Flat Island Preserve in Leesburg. This particular park is my top pick for the upcoming Create Your Own Personal Mandala event on February 24, 2018.
Along my path I spied some fallen palm fronds and magnolia pods. I simply had to make a "bright" arrangement. I have been preparing for a kid's plaza chalk mandala event (details at a later date) and I had one of my homemade portable templates with me. What a great time to check out its five pointed star design. I found a relatively clear spot on the side of the trail. With just a few items from the ground nearby I created a very full earth mandala for random hikers to enjoy. Thanks to digital photography I can capture an image of this fleeting art piece and share it with you too.
I was in JOY JOY making this lovely example of ENVIRONMENTAL ART. All chaotic thought floated away. I was IN NATURE, IN the ZONE and OUT of MY HEAD. After all these years of creating in natural spaces I am never not amazed at the POWER of PEACE that occurs. I do not use my head. The inspiration simply flows through my hands. I believe using what is found on the forest floor is extra powerful. I am not translating an "idea" of nature onto a canvas. I become part of the forest's magical mix. And you can too. Come with me and play!
Please check out the video. I talk about the creation of the mandala and also about a presentation coming up in a few weeks where I will be showing many images of earth mandalas both mine and of other artists. It is a complication of creative work worldwide. I will be speaking of sacred geometry and mandala history plus will have some visual and tactile items for you to play with. The event is free and open to the public. Do come play!

MANDALA MONDAYS - AN INTENTION
It has been a long time since I posted to this blog. Two and a half years to be exact. Have I been busy? OH YES! I have relocated from Argentina and Massachusetts to Central Florida. It took two years of going across and back and up and down the USA to find my new space complete with art studio and lake. I have been drawing and painting mandalas all along the way and winning some art shows for my earth art creations as well. It has been grand and it keeps getting better. I have events to announce coming soon but for now I am only calling out one...
MANDALA MONDAYS - AN INTENTION
I made an intention and wrote it down the other day. "Get back to posting. Make Mondays for Mandala InSPIRITation." Mandala drawing soothes anxiety. The neatness and symmetry pulls one away from fracturing thoughts and into focused pleasure. It is best to draw them with non-lyric soothing music or in quiet. Ditch the TV and background conversations. Put on some headphones to drown out the noise and head to a calm space outside and within.
There is a cold snap happening here right now. It won't last long but it is uncomfortably cold in my studio so I headed to the Fruitland Park Public Library. I set myself up by a sunny window, booted up my netbook to complete some business outlines and correspondences and then plugged into wonderful meditation music. I took out a mandala that I wanted to finish and now I feel so centered and peaceful even with a long "to do list". I am writing this post as the silver metallic ink dries. It feels so beautiful. There is inner peace where there could be chaos.
This is The Practice. It is Meditation with Art. More on that in future posts...
Intend for yourself to take at least 20 minutes a day and chill out. Do something peaceful, focusing and centering. You deserve it. That "to do list" will get done far faster and with more ease so you will gain back those 20 minutes and more!
All dry and my belly calls for some of the spicy chili that I cooked up yesterday to take the chill out. I am heading back to the studio for lunch. Namaste.

HOW'S YOUR MONKEY?
Wow. I have so much going on which is great as long as I keep organized, centered and CLEAR. Before I post about two free and open to the public presentations that I have scheduled this month I want to write about something that whacked me (again) right in the head/mind yesterday.
The monkey mind (kapicitta) is a term sometimes used by the Buddha to describe the agitated, easily distracted and incessantly moving behaviour of ordinary human consciousness (Ja.III,148; V,445). Once he observed: ‘Just as a monkey swinging through the trees grabs one branch and lets it go only to seize another, so too, that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappears continually both day and night.’ (S.II,95).
I don't know how many times I have told people about the therapeutic aspects of making art in nature, specifically mandalas. For me and for just about every person that I have brought out into nature to create, the process frees the mind of useless chatter. Gathering objects, clearing space and constructing art focuses and clears the mind. You are placed IN the environment, IN the creative flow and IN the NOW. There is no time, there is simply space.
Yesterday I made an afternoon visit to Massasoit State Park with my four legged foraging buddy Sr. Benjito. I have been there before but am not very familiar with the trails. I printed a map before leaving the house but we stuck to the main road and nearby side paths. I wanted to check out the landing area at the far pond and if I had the time, make some EnviroArt.
I am a person that notices things, especially thoughts. (The first step is to NOTICE THEM.) Sometimes I am in better control of my thinking but lately I have been doing way too much multi-tasking and bouncing from topic to task to thought to "to do" list to ARGH! It has been as if my mind has been "Running on Dunkin's" caffeine. (An appropriate reference as today is National Donut Day.)
(How do people live like this? I really don't know how they add radio and tv and YAHOO news and FB trending to their already over stimmed minds. No wonder people are so stressed out and on meds.) Anyway...
Lately I haven't given myself enough nature time and my Monkey Mind has been gaining control. As we walked to the landing I recognized that my thoughts were not on where I was at all. I had driven over 20 minutes to this beautiful park but my mind was NOT THERE. We walked over 30 minutes to the landing and I was thinking all the way. Oh such a busy mind.
When we got to the pond I said out loud, "I am so out of practice." I stopped, sat myself down on a bench and looked out over the water. "Relax, take the time, BE here."
I listened to the birds and the leaves rustling in the trees. "How did I stay away so long?"
WRONG QUESTION. The response to that question would have had my mind busy for hours. Don't ask, Don't tell. Just BE quiet.
I secured the dog and kicked around in the the pine needles noticing and observing the things that were lying on the forest floor. I picked up a pine branch, snapped it and held it to my nose. The scent of the sappy wood was intoxicating and nothing like any commercial product ever invented. It was and is REAL PINE. I floated into childhood memories. I noticed the shapes of the different varieties of cones on the ground and broken sticks and branches and.... I bent down to pick up the ones that spoke to me. Before I knew it I had cleared a space and began to construct an earth mandala. It took quite awhile before I even noticed that my monkey had simply and easily disappeared. POOF! Like magic he had VANISHED. My mind did not wander to any thought other than the ART at hand; the colors, shapes, aromas and textures of the materials and where to place them. I was in blissful peace.
The sun was lowering in the sky evidenced by the shadows on the mandala so I knew we needed to start hiking to the parking lot. I shot a few final photos, unhooked the dog and began the walk back and... HELLO MONKEY - HE'S BACK! Ah but I was in far better control this time. I could consciously brush him aside and return to the sensations of the breeze and sun on my skin and sounds around me. I needed to this this over and over and over again. When you condition yourself out of the NOW it takes practice to get back in. The first step is... to notice.
What about you? How's your Monkey? Do you think he needs a vacation from your mind? YES! Do you need some help centering and focusing? I invite you to go to my website GETIN2NATURE.COM and to the MEETUP GROUP group and join for free (if you just want to be on a mailing list send me a mail) and take an EnviroArt workshop. It will do you good. Then go out on your own and leave your Monkey at home.

ENVIRO ART PLUS A HEALTHY TIP
I am trying this post as a direct share link from my getin2nature youtube channel so I don't know what it will look like until after I hit the publish button. Ohhhhh - such adventure.
So in this video not only am I making a part of a land art installation, I am also teaching you about a great acupunture/acupressure point for fighting off getting sick or coughing from allergies. How fun! I get to do two of my most favorite things in one video. :)
Enjoy!

HOT OFF THE DIGITAL PRESSES
I haven't been posting for a few weeks as I have been busy creating a new website and book. I will share about the website another day. Today I want to shout out the book. The book is a compilation of images of the nature mandalas that I have made in the urban parks of Buenos Aires, Argentina contrasted against city scenes. You can view the complete book by clicking the link below the cover photo or by going to the top of this blog. I have embedded the viewing link in the blog's top border.
(wait for the photos to load)
I hope you enjoy it.
In less than two weeks I will be on USA soil again. I have enjoyed my time here in Argentina and am looking forward to getting back into my New England woods.
Until soon....
Patt
PS: I will shout it out later but for the impatient ones here's the link for a sneak peak at the new site.
